again, another storm brewing. this time already at someone's expense. trying to dig deep here, to figure out what the hell is going on. torn between wanting to know what is obviously not right and being too afraid to delve deeper than I'm used to. sleep debt paid. so one factor crossed off the list of anything. done with school for the next few months and not an ounce of freedom felt. perhaps it's biochemical? most of everything is, isn't it? psychological? perhaps i'm addicted to the sadness. but then, no, that's just an excuse. for the first time it's clear that this life is mine, but even so, not really. no more cookie cutter options. for all my being me, i'm so generic. i'm you. i'm everyone. i'm no one.

Someone once told me “you know why you’re mean? Because you think being called nice is an insult.” Isn’t it? Isn’t that what you say about someone when their personality is so unremarkable that, when pressed for an opinion, all you can think of to say is that they’re nice? Isn’t that the polite way to tell your mother that you had the most uninteresting date ever with the guy she set you up with? “He was nice.”

All too often, after I’m safely past the first few impressions with someone, they will get too drunk and rhetorically ask, “can I tell you something?” which inevitably follows with the confession “I thought you were such a bitch when we first met!” After years of reluctantly entertaining this conversation, I’ve learned it mostly has to do with my face. I have that perma-judgmental mean girl face – whether I’m actually judging you, trying to focus in a meeting, or find you really hot.

The mean girl complex comes with a love hate relationship with the label. Some days I accept it with pride and a sinister grin, but more and more I resent it as the lazy label that it is. If a “mean” person is conventionally offensive, selfish, and malicious, then sure I am mean some days, like most people, but those are not traits that define me.
After recently being indicted as a mean girl for telling someone I didn’t want to meet their friend because her favorite artist was Fergie, I thought more about my mean girl label. I realized that some of the traits that do define me are too often conflated with “meanness”.

I’m picky about the company I keep. I’ve been on this earth for 20 something years now, and I know that a guy who texts me at 8am the morning after we met saying, “thinking about your smile… J” is just not a guy I’m interested in. On a Friday night, I’d rather lie and say my parents are in town than go to a club for a girl’s birthday who I went to the beach with once in college. Is that mean? No. Antisocial? Probably.

I’m cynical. I know lots of genuinely nice people, some close friends. But I probably know more nice opportunists. That part-time friend who didn’t show up to your birthday but then wants to catch up because “it’s been like forever!!!” and casually mentions over drinks that she wants you to submit her resume to your boss. She’s not a mean person, but I’ve come to expect a lot of “niceness” to be motivated by self-interest. I’m guilty of it too. And actually we all are – it’s human nature.

I’m candid. I say what I think. Sometimes in regard of your feelings, sometimes not. I tend to have either the sarcastic genre of candor that amuses people, or the “thank me later” genre that burns now, but makes sense later. But my intentions are (mostly) pure. If I tell you that you have bad taste in men, it’s probably because you keep picking guys that only call you after 1am, because you keep answering.

I’m competitive. I like to get ahead. If someone at work is going out of their way to make me look like a slacker, I’ll retaliate in my own special way. And sure, if it looks like I’m competing for a guy’s affection, I’m prone to make passive aggressive insults about other girls in his company, and brainstorm creatively insulting epithets with my friends behind her back. Most women do this; it’s just part of the emotional hygiene of being a 20 something.

I don’t use exclamation points without irony. Too many people use too many exclamation points. And too many people get insecure if you don’t reciprocate. If you ask me out and text me “so excited for dinner!!!” I’m likely to respond something short like, “me too. See you in a bit.” The absence of an exclamation point, or three, does not undermine my excitement – but the conversation might.

When people call me “mean”, they tend to deliver the news in this apologetic tone like there are only a few of us out there – like I’m part of some minority group. Like somehow my cynical humor and punctuation preferences marginalize me. There still seems to be some pervading myth of this species of “nice” people who walk around smiling, emanating their bright aura of magnanimity. From what I’ve noticed, it’s an endangered species – at least in New York.

These analogies were playing in my head mid last year and it's just so... unnerving that I'm revisiting these ideas because... I thought I had come a long way since then. I guess theories (or more like phony concepts I manage to come up with) that get forcefully locked up in imaginary boxes always find themselves ways of coming out to play in due time.

The arguments haven't changed much, no, but the desperation of just wanting to figure it all out has changed dramatically. It's a milder form now. The prods at my heart are gentle, but persistent and they are always reminding me of our differences and how I have not dealt with them as much as I say I have.

I was going to explain my analogies and you know, be all blatant and shit. But no, I'm amazingly annoying like that. Say stuff so personal you haven't a clue what I'm trying to say but enough to get you seriously wondering what the hell I'm talking about. Haha. Most people will probably get it wrong though, ha. And thank God for that.

that I'd like to say to 10 different people

Our friendship started off because we had mutual friends, if I remember correctly. Didn't personally know you very, very well until many years of being in the same 'group', can you imagine that! We're so different; from our taste in boys (haha - pretty boy manly man), to our taste in music, and books and a lot of other things! Our interests hardly overlap but you're one of my closest friends all the same. I might not be very good at cheering you up, or I may not be great at telling you all my deepest, darkest secrets, but it doesn't mean I love you any less.

I miss you and I miss our friendship. I don't think I'll ever stop missing you because I don't think we'll ever go back to where we once were. Maybe ten years from now we'll cross paths once again and our meetings won't be peppered with awkward familiarity. I'll be as brand new a person to you as you will be to me - the unfinished past forgotten and forgiven.

I don't know you at all. But you give me nightmares. Quit it. Kthxbai.

You are one of the biggest blessings in my life. A friend I truly treasure. Without you, I probably would have gone insane, done (more) stupid things, suffered more emotional disquiet, and... I really could go on forever. Basically, you've been such a big part of my life and you know it. I would consider it unnecessary if you ever thanked me for my friendship and you'd do the same. A new friend. One of the two potential life-long friends, mentioned in an earlier post. It doesn't really matter (I'm lying, it does matter) that you may not feel the same way about our friendship but I'm thankful that I met you. I would be a complete outcast, I think, if it weren't for you. In some ways I would die if you knew this was about you. And the worst part is, is that I think you know this means you, ha-ha.

We've come a long way, princess. From best friends, to enemies, and once our hatred was nulled - a mutual indifference, then a polite hi-bye relationship, and finally a strong and loving friendship! You are one hell of a personality. Aunty + little girl all-in-one. You remain an inspiration to me when I feel lazy/ unfriendly. I constantly admire how you can pull off blunt-ness without being bitchy! --something I could neverrrr do. EVER.

You're a piece of work. Always miss you when you're away, but when you're around, I forget why I missed you in the first place. Ha-ha. The most reliable person I know, in so many ways. A hard and meticulous worker. An admirable leader. Although I'm really not very good at keeping in touch with you, you've got to know your friendship means a lot to me and I'm positive most people feel the same. All the very best, you. 2010 is just over and I feel like I have to at least give this year a (not-so passing) mention. 2010 was one of the strangest years, yet. I'm still struggling - I can't seem to decide what I feel about it. I think that's the reason I'm actually writing something after so long - in hopes that by the end of this blog post, I will be able to decide exactly what the year meant, no - means, to me.

It doesn't feel like everything I've been through could have happened within the space of just 12 months. I really want to document certain things but it's just going to be very difficult because I'll be annoyed that it isn't properly organised! And random thoughts will surface while I'm in the middle of thinking something else! But whatever, it hardly matters anyway, whether or not there is a proper flow. I'm not being graded, now am I? Haha. Not like I'm ever graded for my writing anymore, come to think of it.

I'll start with school... after all, I did spend 24 hours a week in class. While the year started out pretty meh, you can't imagine how relieved I am that it became gradually less 'meh' and more 'hey, this isn't so bad'. Sometimes even pretty nice! I don't mean the lessons, mind you. Lessons are lessons... a gazillion times more informative than high school lessons (highschoolteachers,istillloveyou) but just the environment and my overall... being? Obviously, I had a very IceQueen beginning; but I think at least a handful of people have realised that I'm not all that icy (: Made a few potential lifetime friends, and although 'few' means two, I think it's not too bad a number. Hee.

Some weekends I was involved in teaching, and as cliché at it sounds; I was taught a lot. About others and about myself. Other weekends, I was involved in another kind of voluntary work. As much as I'd like to believe or say that it was all for the benefit of others, some selfish agenda probably did contribute to my seemingly active involvement. Either way, the work is done and will be continued in the most fulfilling way possible.

My most significant 2010 memories? Although they are a huge part of me (duh, most significant, right?), it almost feels like they belong to someone else. Now isn't that peculiar? I think not. I think some of you will understand, even if your version of it is slightly varied from mine.

I am by no means done talking about my past year, but I suppose I am done here. Writing anything else won't bring any more comfort than I have already derived from whatever I've just written.

In a nutshell?

Figured out what I'd like to spend the rest of my life doing, made some pretty big decisions, received news of an amazing opportunity, lied, told the truth, lied some more, guilt trips, happy trips, trips with friends, trips with loved ones, forty minute drives, forty minute drives that take an hour and a half instead, beautiful sleepless nights, frustrating sleepless nights, shots, still a klutz, fell in love, blissful moments, painful heartache, long talks, short talks, small talk, no talk, clashing opinions, manipulation, sincerity, fought through shit, danced, still more shit, ignored shit, one step forward; two steps back, giant leaps.

Still here, still me.

The Birth of Jesus Foretold:

Mary, a virgin, was living in Galilee of Nazareth and was engaged to be married to Joseph, a Jewish carpenter. An angel visited her and explained to her that she would conceive a son by the power of the Holy Spirit. She would carry and give birth to this child and she would name him Jesus. Mary was afraid and troubled by the angel's words. Being a virgin, Mary questioned the angel, "How will this be?" The angel explained that the child would be God's own Son and, therefore, "Nothing is impossible with God." Humbled and in awe, Mary believed the angel of the Lord and rejoiced in God her Savior.

The Birth of Jesus:

While Mary was still engaged to Joseph, she miraculously became pregnant through the Holy Spirit, as foretold to her by the angel. When Mary told Joseph she was pregnant, he had every right to feel disgraced. He knew the child was not his own, and Mary's apparent unfaithfulness carried a grave social stigma. Joseph not only had the right to divorce Mary, under Jewish law she could be put to death by stoning.

Although Joseph's initial reaction was to break the engagement, the appropriate thing for a righteous man to do, he treated Mary with extreme kindness. He did not want to cause her further shame, so he decided to act quietly. But God sent an angel to Joseph in a dream to verify Mary's story and reassure him that his marriage to her was God's will. The angel explained that the child within Mary was conceived by the Holy Spirit, that his name would be Jesus and that he was the Messiah, God with us.

When Joseph woke from his dream, he willingly obeyed God and took Mary home to be his wife, in spite of the public humiliation he would face. Perhaps this noble quality is one of the reasons God chose him to be the Messiah's earthly father.

At that time, Caesar Augustus decreed that a census be taken, and every person in the entire Roman world had to go to his own town to register. Joseph, being of the line of David, was required to go to Bethlehem to register with Mary. While in Bethlehem, Mary gave birth to Jesus. Probably due to the census, the inn was too crowded, and Mary gave birth in a crude stable. She wrapped the baby in cloths and placed him in a manger.

The Shepherd's Worship the Savior:

Out in the fields, an angel of the Lord appeared to the shepherds who were tending their flocks of sheep by night. The angel announced that the Savior had been born in the town of David. Suddenly a great host of heavenly beings appeared with the angels and began singing praises to God. As the angelic beings departed, the shepherds decided to travel to Bethlehem and see the Christ-child.

There they found Mary, Joseph and the baby, in the stable. After their visit, they began to spread the word about this amazing child and everything the angel had said about him. They went on their way still praising and glorifying God. But Mary kept quiet, treasuring their words and pondering them in her heart. It must have been beyond her ability to grasp, that sleeping in her arms—the tender child she had just borne—was the Savior of the world.

I'm sorry I forgot what Christmas is truly about. It's been a horrible weekend. Emotional turmoil and semi-isolation. My problems are selfish problems. Won't You please shift my focus?

I was being a complete YouTube junkie last night, and I came across some incredibly cute videos by Wong Fu Productions and I really liked watching them! I mean, it's actually good stuff - it's got heart, not like the rest of the nonsense YouTube videos. Asian Americans Wesley Chan, Ted Fu, and Philip Wang are the genius creators behind these short films. They're in their late 20s now, and have had their creations featured in several international film festivals. I am in awe. They are so kool, zomg. Ha ha.

There is so much to be desired in my command of the English language - though of course, I always knew that. It saddens me that I will never, ever be able to present my ideas, however beautiful or tragic, into a form tangible and accessible to the rest of you. I have not the talent, nor the vocabulary to come up with any such kinds of extraordinary writing. So upsetting! Lucky for me, being a writer isn't my one true passion or life's dream or anything of that sort. Reading (pieces that actually count as) literature always amplifies the longing. Soft sigh.

I must have watched Jane Eyre, the movie, fifty times as a child but I only got down to reading the novel itself a month or two back. That was the first book I had read in months - sad statistic for someone who claims to enjoy reading, eh. Anyway, I liked it. Grey as it was. Maybe it's the sentimental child in me who liked it, I don't know. Emily Bronte's talent lies in her descriptive writing. There's not one page in the book where she fails to tell you how something looks, or how someone feels. Gets a bit draggy, but it's all very effective. Anyway, she must've been through some serious shit to have come up with such a book. It isn't happy at all, except for the ending. And even then the happiness was... dulled by some not-so-great conditions.

Today, I read Alice in Wonderland. Lewis Carroll was probably very, very high while writing this book. So cool. I wish I thought of things like that. It'd make daydreaming a hundred times more entertaining. Who'd need movies, with an imagination like that? It reminds me of "Jangan Bunuh Rama-rama", one of the many dramas we had to learn back in high school. Actually, it's the other way around. The drama reminded me of Alice. All these peculiar people with their very singular ideas. Genius.
